RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
