Minister Says MoD Investigating Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing secret information in any cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Staff

During a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

He explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however stressed that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret level in any car, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

This revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

The wider security environment highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of government activities, from transport use to communication practices.
