Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the ability to question certain decisions made by the official, following the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
